Dr Simon Barton
Dr Barton has been a consultant at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital since 1990. He has been Clinical Director of the HIV and Genitourinary Medicine Directorate since 1996. He was previously registrar and research fellow at St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, and senior registrar at St. Stephen’s and Westminster Hospitals. He completed his MD thesis on the subject of local immunology of the cervix, with particular relevance to the effects of smoking and viral infection.
His main interest is in the treatment and prevention of transmission of recurrent viral infections, including genital herpes and HIV infection in women.
He is an Executive Committee member of the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI), and Treasurer of its European branch. He is the UK representative to the Scientific Board of the EADV. He lectures at both international and UK level and is involved in educational training within the UK. He has written over one hundred and fifty papers and five books.
